The next day while we prepare the permits for the Everest 3 High Pass trek, our Narba Treks & Expeditions trekking guide will give you a detailed briefing in to the itinerary of the Everest 3 High Pass trek. In the afternoon we take you on an exclusive sightseeing tour around the Kathmandu Valley. A great way to soak up the rich culture that Nepal has to offer! First we visit the Kathmandu Durbar (Palace) Square, Swayambunath Monkey Temple, the Boudhanath Stupa, and the Pashupatinath Temple.
The first part of the Everest 3 High Pass trek is to reach and cross the highest of the 3 mountain passes, the Kongma La at 5,545m/18,192ft! It’ll take 7 to 8 days of trekking through the pristine Everest region to reach the 1 st pass. First we’ll have to fly to the world’s 38 th highest airport in Lukla from Kathmandu. Having arrived, we meet up with our porter team and prepare to officially start the Everest 3 High Pass trek. Phakding at 2,652m/8,700ft is our first destination. Still at a low elevation it’s from the second day of trekking when we reach Namche Bazaar that the tree lines disappear and those mesmerizing Himalayan valleys come in view!
Namche Bazaar located at 3,440m/11,283ft is just amazing! Serving as an acclimatization town for all treks to Everest, we also take a day extra here to properly acclimatize. Narba Treks & Expeditions first priority is to make sure that you can fully enjoy the Everest 3 High Pass trek. Acclimatizing helps to reduce the risk of getting AMS or Acute Mountain Sickness. During this day acclimatization day we hike up to the famous Everest View Hotel from where the first nice views of Mt Everest come in sight. The next few days we trek to the Tengboche Monastary, and Dingboche. Here we hold our 2 nd acclimatization day and hike up to Nagarsyang Peak. Located in the Imja Khola Valley from Dingboche you can expect to see incredible view of the iconic mother’s necklace mountain, Mt Ama Dablam and the popular Island Peak.
On day nine of the Everest 3 High Pass trek we trek to Chukung, the last village before the Kongma La Pass. We are now at an elevation of 4730m/15,518ft! Chukung Ri or Chukung Hill is just a short hike away from the village and we’ll take advantage of the incredible views this hill offers by holding a short hike up there. Especially Mt Ama Dablam and the Amphu Labsa Mountain come in sight during the hike. Its day 10 of the Everest 3 High Pass trek and time to climb our first pass of the trek! The Kongma La while the highest is straight forward. Ascending all the way up the pass takes time so we make an early departure and can take two routes. We can either retrace our steps from Chukung back to Bibre or follow the northwestern path over the Nuptse Glacier moraines. The views atop the Kongma La are absolutely incredible and a big highlight of the Everest 3 High Pass trek!
We descend down to Lobuche village and stay the overnight, as tomorrow we trek to Everest Base Camp. It’s a short trek from Lobuche to Gorakshep and the trail follows a part of the Khumbu Glacier. After checking in the guesthouse of Gorakshep we hike up to EBC on day 11 of the Everest 3 High Pass trek. The views are just incredible and being at the foot of the world’s highest mountain gives such a surreal feeling! And definitely worth it! Having spent some time at Everest Base Camp we hike back down to Gorakshep and prepare for an early sleep, for the next day we hold a sunrise hike up the Kala Pattar Hill. It’ll still be dark when we depart and with our torches in hand we make our way up the hill just in time to see the sun appearing over the Himalayas!
Congratulations! The first part of the Everest 3 High Pass trek is completed! Now we head for the second mountain pass of the Everest region, the Cho La Pass at 5,420m/17,782. First we retrace our steps back to Lobuche village and spend another night here. The next day we trek west to Dzongla village, which lays near by the mountain pass. During this trekking day you’ll be able to see nice views of the Awi Peak. Furthermore we’ll be passing by some stupas and a memorial site as well as visiting the Chola Tsho Lake. The next day we head for the Cho La Pass and Thangnak village. Considered as the easiest peak to climb of the Everest 3 High Pass trek, the Cho La Pass has also some of the best views! We’ll be sure to enjoy the sights of Mt Cholatse, Mt Ama Dablam, as well as Chola Lake.
Descending down the pass we reach Thangnak, the last village before reaching the pristine Gokyo Lakes. It’ll be day 15 of the Everest 3 High Pass trek when we reach Gokyo. Located at the biggest of the lakes, Gokyo village is truly a marvel! Known as the highest fresh water lakes, the turquoise colored waters reflect the surrounding mountains and peaks creating a beautiful tranquil scene. You can explore around the lake and enjoy the views. Narba Treks & Expeditions want you to have the best experience of the Everest region and so we’ll spend an extra day in Gokyo for exploring and hiking up the Gokyo Ri Hill at 5,360m/17,585ft! Enjoy the amazing views of Mt Everest, Mt Makalu, Mt Cho-Oyu and the Ngozumba Glacier.
It’s time for the last part of the Everest 3 High Pass trek, and on day 17 we make our way to Marlung via the last mountain pass, the Renjo La at 5,345m/ 17,536ft. Being the smallest of the Everest 3 high passes, is just perfect. We hike slowly up the pass and enjoy the views of the Rolwaling Ranges in the distances. Once on the top you’ll feel a great sense of accomplishments as you have successfully faced the 3 High Mountain Passes of the Everest region! While the views atop the Renjo La Pass are similar than those of Gokyo Ri, you’ll still be able to see a last view of the Himalayas! Descending down the pass we reach at village of Marlung. Another day of trekking to reach Thame, and another to reach back at Monjo where we checked our permits on day 4 of the Everest 3 High Pass trek. On the way back to Monjo from Thame, we’ll pass by Namche Bazaar again for some last sightseeing. From Monjo its just retracing our steps back to Lukla via Phakding.
Back at Lukla since here is where we say goodbye to our brave porter team, Narba Treks & Expeditions invites you to celebrate with team the success of your Everest 3 High Pass trek in Nepal. The next day we fly back to Kathmandu and we’ll transfer you back to your booked hotel. Trip Details:
The Everest 3 High Pass trek is considered one of the hardest treks in the Everest region. You’ll have to cross 3 high altitude mountain passes as well as trek for more than 15 days in the Himalayas. While considered hard the trek is certainly doable and with Narba Treks & Expeditions expert guidance you are sure to complete the trek!
From Lukla back to Lukla the Everest 3 High Passes trek takes exactly 18 days, inclusive of two acclimatization days and one rest day at Gokyo. While it is possible to shorten the trek of the 3 high passes, it’s not advised as the risk of AMS can increase as well!
Accommodations during the Everest 3 High Pass trek are standard guest or tea houses. Every room is fitted with two or three one-person beds and have public bathrooms as well as a common mess hall. The further we ascend the less facilities become available but Wi-Fi connection can be found at every guesthouse, just not with the speed of home.
No, you do not need any prior trekking experience to successfully complete the Everest 3 High Pass trek. Narba Treks & Expeditions has guided novice trekkers on this trek since over a decade, we do highly recommend to do some serious fitness training before undergoing this trek in Nepal.
The Kongma- La Pass and the Renjo La Pass can both be skipped during the Everest 3 High Pass trek, while this is optional we do advice against skipping any mountain pass as it will greatly affect your trekking experience! Face the 3 Passes and get that sense of accomplishment at the end of the trek for the best experience in the Himalayas.
